London Eye, Camden, 2006
In 2006, I was working in Camden, London. It was a great place to get into photography.
Sometimes, I’d be having a lunchtime pint (is that still a thing at work?) in the Elephant’s Head. It had a great window at the top of the pub, looking out onto a chaotic world. As an aside, the window had a crack in it and I remember it being freezing in there in the winter.
Camden was full of colour and interesting characters. I’d often leave my pint, nip out and ask someone for a photo with my wee Nikon Coolpix point-and-shoot.
One day, I was walking along the High Road when I spotted a double-decker crawling through the traffic. On its side was an advert with a large eyeball. The idea was to get it ‘looking’ through the lens of a pair of sunglasses on a market stall.
The trader was happy to let me get on with it. As always, waiting for buses, it seemed to take forever, but it all finally lined up and I got the shot I was after.
Even though it was a small camera, it packed a punch. That photo was the first I sold as a canvas… cheers, Raxit and Valerie!
