Bang goes the neighbourhood

Black and white photo of Caledonia Road flats demolition in Gorbals, Glasgow.

Hi there.

First post, so I’ll start with my main homepage image.

The flats in the picture at Caledonian Road were part of the landscape from my living room window in the Gorbals. I’ve watched over the years as the lights on the kitchen windows got fewer and fewer until there were none.

On the day of the demolition, I was just outside the exclusion zone, so I was able to open my window and have my camera ready on the tripod. I had another one over my shoulder and sat waiting for the bang.

It was only about five hours in the end! If I remember correctly, this was a bit shorter than the wait for the demolition of the Sandiefield Road flats a few years earlier.

I photographed that event from nearby Norfolk Court, now also gone and replaced with new housing.

I think this was my most dramatic image from a day that marked the end of an era.
